Inspiration From Other People - Is It Worth Listening To A Film Star?

Yesterday, I listened to an interview with Michael York, the film star. I listened half-heartedly at first and then with fascination. By the end of the conversation I had discovered at least one inspiring truth i.e. It is well worth listening to other people without prejudging what they can teach you.

It is amazing how much other humans can teach us. But if we don’t believe that they can teach us something, we will not listen to them nor will we read their books or listen to their audios or watch their videos and DVD’s. We will miss out on huge amounts of valuable information.

Michael York (D’Artagnan in The Three Musketeers) went to the USA about 30 years ago and has lived there longer than he lived in the UK.

He was not tempted to join other UK actors like Oliver Reed in alcoholic and drug excesses. He could see no sense in not being at his best. Life is too interesting.

He now lives in California with his American wife where it is easy to live a healthy lifestyle. He asks: “Why wait until you get ill and then go to a doctor to clean up the mess? Why not take preventive measures to keep you in optimum shape? We take care of our cars; why not our own bodies?”

He takes herbs and vitamins and a chiropractic treatment once a week. He does not believe in treating the head (or mind) without taking the body into account. He prefers a holistic approach.

He has a thoughtful faith. “I have a faith but not a faith that wears a label. It’s an amalgamation of all sorts of influences. I was raised in the Church of England and was brought up with the beauty of the English Bible. It never leaves you but I get resentful at fundamentalist Christianity when it becomes my God and not your God.”

Agnosticism is part of his amalgamation of influences: “There’s nothing we can be sure of until we pass into the next dimension.”

He was very impressed by a comment from his friend Peter Ustinov: “You know, we are united by our doubts and divided by our convictions.”
York comments: “In the world today, that is so true”.

When he was asked “Do you believe in an afterlife?”, he gave a fascinating and inspiring reply:

“If you get into the study of health and the body you find out that we are all energetic organisms. The whole world is a compact of different energies. It seems quite plausible that there is a different sort of energy operating after life”

“Do you meditate?”
“I have tried to meditate but I am a little impatient I confess. I do listen to classical music, if I can, all day. That is an equivalent of meditating. Somehow those great rhythms do wonderful things to your mind and body.”

I learned a lot from Michael York yesterday about health, meditation and life after death but the greatest lesson of all was:

Have enough faith to listen to other people, whoever they are, and to read their books. You might learn something worth learning! You might even be excited and inspired.

You don’t have to agree with everything other people say but at least listen to their views and you may well hear something you have never heard before or have never heard expressed so well before.

If you have a stack of books you have not read or a stack of videos you have not watched just start reading and watching. You might be amazed at what you will learn!

Even if you have read the books before or watched the videos before, read and watch them again. It is surprising how much valuable information we forget. We all need reminding and inspiring again and again.

Crowd Anxiety

Especially during the holiday season, you can find yourself in some very crowded situations. It can be very tense, and your reaction might start to get hostile. You may find that you are getting jumpy and nervous. You may also find that you start to feel crowded in, have problems breathing. It is a form of claustrophobia and can be fixed with a few calming techniques.

However, you want to try and avoid the situation whenever possible. Because the situations will invariably raise your stress levels, you want to try and keep calm, try and stay relaxed as often as possible. And since you will inevitably end up in these situations at times, the best thing to do is try and find ways to stay calm whenever you can.

The first thing that you can do is make sure you have a clear exit path. Know exactly how you want to get out of the situation and know how you are getting there. It may help for you to keep one eye on that exit path to make sure it doesn’t get blocked off. And if it does, you can start looking for another one. Finding a few exit routes in the beginning might be helpful. You might also want to start shopping during the middle of the day, or online. Because there are less crowds, you will be able to control your entry and exit a little more, you won’t be jostled as much and you might feel more comfortable. Online, you have no people and you should feel fine.

Exercise And Stress

“Stress is when you wake up screaming and you realize you haven’t fallen asleep yet.”

Kim rolled over and reached for alarm that rang much too early. It was a restless night’s sleep as usual and the pain in her neck reminds her that today is going to be another long day at a job that used to give her joy.

She reaches for her favorite black skirt but sighs and throws it back in the closet. It doesn’t fit like it used to. Depressed, she doesn’t know what to wear anymore. She feels bloated and fat. Most mornings she can go to the bathroom and count on her morning “meditation” to feel better but lately even her monthly cycle has been off.

Kim opens the bedroom door and sneaks a peak at her husband; she hasn’t been able to be intimate with him in weeks even though she loves him very much. She realizes that she is not interested in many of the things that she used to enjoy. She just seems to be spending most of her time irritable and tired. It doesn’t help that her hair is frazzled and at 32 she keeps getting visits from the acne fairy.

Kim is like a lot of women these days, overworked, stressed out and fighting depression. She hates the thought of seeing the doctor and taking medications but she doesn’t know what else to try. Kim is not alone. 90 percent of all visits to the doctor are for stress related disorders.

Stressed Out!

Does Kim’s situation sound familiar? One of the most common problems I hear from clients is that they felt fatigued, anxious or depressed. And they often have trouble sleeping, even though they are exhausted.

Most of them share a common underlying theme, adrenal burnout. It’s the result of racing through life with a constantly aroused sympathetic “fight or flight” nervous system.

In the heightened nervous state of adrenal burnout, the body overproduces adrenaline, Cortisol and other stress hormones. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, the front line in the stress reaction, to show wear and tear and become depleted. This frequently leads to impairment in the thyroid gland, which can cause a further decline in energy level and mood. This is one of the reasons why so many women have thyroid glands that don’t work well.

The first step for Kim and women like her is to exercise. Taking personal time for you in of itself is a great stress reducer but when that time involves exercise the benefit is two fold. Simply going from out of shape to fit reduces stress levels by increasing a sense of well being and self confidence.

Feeling confused and overwhelmed is a common stress symptom and through exercise the blood flow to your brain is improved, bringing additional sugars and oxygen and a sense of wellbeing. This increased blood flow also brings the precious endorphin. The post workout endorphins are chemicals secreted by the body after intense exercise and they make you feel great. They are a legal and healthy “high”, a gift from Mother Nature.

How to exercise to reduce stress is a common question that is easy to answer. The required amount of exercise time required to decrease your stress level is minimal. If you want to only apply moderate intensity to your exercise regime, then 30 minutes of walking or other exercise 5 times a week works perfectly. For those that like to exercise more intensely(getting your heart rate to 70% or more of your max heart rate), 20-30 minutes 3 times a week will do wonders for you.

When starting your stress reduction exercise program make sure you include all three kinds of fitness.

The first kind of fitness is flexibility. Tying in with your stress reduction theme, if you combine a tai chi or yoga type program, not only will you gain flexibility but you will also reap benefits from the meditative and calmness aspects of these disciplines. Taking as little as 10 minutes from your day to focus on your breathing and flexibility will help shift your attention from a stressful situation to your body, allowing you to cope more effectively with any situation.

Short, rapid breathing is usually associated with stress, so the objective is to deliver as much oxygen to the body as possible and just relax.

The second kind of fitness is cardiovascular work or aerobics. Doing your cardio will not only burn fat and reduce the health risks associated with the mid-line bulge but also increase your blood flow and vitality.

The third kind of fitness is muscular work or weight lifting. Many women use weight lifting to “work out” their stress and leave their problems in a pool of “glow” on the gym floor. Lifting weights changes your shape, releases endorphins and increases your confidence in many aspects of life. Weight lifting if kept under an hour has a very positive effect on your hormone levels. It increases the fat burning ones and decreases the catabolic hormones like Cortisol and DHEA. These hormones when released repeatedly over time can cause several problems including depression and cardiovascular disease.

Getting Exercise In

If you just can’t find time for a structured program, then your stress is probably caused by doing too much! Here are some quick ways to beat stress during the day:

Walk to work. Some might say that this will involve an extra hour a day to your schedule.I say “So what? Why are you in such a hurry?” If you do live far away, then just park the car a half mile away. You can also get off the bus before your stop and walk the rest of the way.

At the mall, park your car far away. Not only will you get some exercise but you won’t get dings in your paint job.

Use your bike to get around. If the last time you were on a bike was when you were a kid then you forget how much fun it can be!

Take the stairs instead of the escalator. When I went to Las Vegas there would be a line up in front of every escalator, and not a soul on the stairs. It’s crazy that some people would wait two minutes to glide up these escalators when they could be up there in 10 seconds and get some exercise.

The bottom line is that stress comes from feeling out of control. Only you can regain that control and taking care of yourself. Exercise is the first step.

Gender and the Narcissist

Question:

Are female narcissists any different? You seem to talk only about male narcissists!

Answer:

I keep using the male third person singular because most narcissists (75%) are males and more so because there is little difference between the male and female narcissists.

In the manifestation of their narcissism, female and male narcissists, inevitably, do tend to differ. They emphasise different things. They transform different elements of their personalities and of their lives into the cornerstones of their disorder.

Women concentrate on their body (many also suffer from eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa). They flaunt and exploit their physical charms, their sexuality, their socially and culturally determined “femininity”. They secure their Narcissistic Supply through their more traditional gender role: the home, children, suitable careers, their husbands (”the wife of…”), their feminine traits, their role in society, etc.

It is no wonder than narcissists - both men and women - are chauvinistic and conservative. They depend to such an extent on the opinions of people around them - that, with time, they are transformed into ultra-sensitive seismographs of public opinion, barometers of prevailing social fashions, and guardians of conformity. The narcissist cannot afford to seriously alienate his “constituency”, those people who reflect his False Self back to him. The very proper and on-going functioning of the narcissist’s Ego depends on the goodwill and the collaboration of his human environment.

True, besieged and consumed by pernicious guilt feelings - many a narcissist finally seek to be punished. The self-destructive narcissist then plays the role of the “bad guy” (or “bad girl”). But even then it is within the traditional socially allocated roles. To ensure social opprobrium (read: attention), the narcissist exaggerates these roles to a caricature.

A woman is likely to label herself a “whore” and a male narcissist to self-style himself a “vicious, unrepentant criminal”. Yet, these again are traditional social roles. Men are likely to emphasise intellect, power, aggression, money, or social status. Women are likely to emphasise body, looks, charm, sexuality, feminine “traits”, homemaking, children and childrearing - even as they seek their masochistic punishment.

Another difference is in the way the genders react to treatment. Women are more likely to resort to therapy because they are more likely to admit to psychological problems. But while men may be less inclined to DISCLOSE or to expose their problems to others (the macho-man factor) - it does not necessarily imply that they are less prone to admit it to themselves. Women are also more likely to ask for help than men.

Yet, the prime rule of narcissism must never be forgotten: the narcissist uses everything around him or her to obtain his (or her) Narcissistic Supply. Children happen to be more attached to the female narcissist due to the way our society is still structured and to the fact that women are the ones to give birth. It is easier for a woman to think of her children as her extensions because they once indeed were her physical extensions and because her on-going interaction with them is both more intensive and more extensive.

This means that the male narcissist is more likely to regard his children as a nuisance than as a source of rewarding Narcissist Supply - especially as they grow older and become autonomous. Devoid of the diversity of alternatives available to men - the narcissistic woman fights to maintain her most reliable Source of Supply: her children. Through insidious indoctrination, guilt formation, emotional sanctions, deprivation and other psychological mechanisms, she tries to induce in them a dependence, which cannot be easily unravelled.

But, there is no psychodynamic difference between children, money, or intellect, as Sources of Narcissistic Supply. So, there is no psychodynamic difference between male and female narcissist. The only difference is in their choices of Sources of Narcissistic Supply.

An interesting side issue relates to transsexuals.

Philosophically, there is little difference between a narcissist who seeks to avoid his True Self (and positively to become his False Self) - and a transsexual who seeks to discard his true gender. But this similarity, though superficially appealing, is questionable.

People sometimes seek sex reassignment because of advantages and opportunities which, they believe, are enjoyed by the other sex. This rather unrealistic (fantastic) view of the other is faintly narcissistic. It includes elements of idealised over-valuation, of self-preoccupation, and of objectification of one’s self. It demonstrates a deficient ability to empathise and some grandiose sense of entitlement (”I deserve to have the best opportunities/advantages”) and omnipotence (”I can be whatever I want to be - despite nature/God”).

This feeling of entitlement is especially manifest in some gender dysphoric individuals who aggressively pursue hormonal or surgical treatment. They feel that it is their inalienable right to receive it on demand and without any strictures or restrictions. For instance, they oftentimes refuse to undergo psychological evaluation or treatment as a condition for the hormonal or surgical treatment.

It is interesting to note that both narcissism and gender dysphoria are early childhood phenomena. This could be explained by problematic Primary Objects, dysfunctional families, or a common genetic or biochemical problem. It is too early to say which. As yet, there isn’t even an agreed typology of gender identity disorders - let alone an in-depth comprehension of their sources.

There are mental disorders, which afflict a specific sex more often. This has to do with hormonal or other physiological dispositions, with social and cultural conditioning through the socialisation process, and with role assignment through the gender differentiation process. None of these seem to be strongly correlated to the formation of malignant narcissism. The Narcissistic Personality Disorder (as opposed, for instance, to the Borderline or the Histrionic Personality Disorders, which afflict women more than men) seems to conform to social mores and to the prevailing ethos of capitalism. Social thinkers like Lasch speculated that modern American culture - a narcissistic, self-centred one - increases the rate of incidence of the Narcissistic Personality Disorder. As Kernberg observed:

“The most I would be willing to say is that society can make serious psychological abnormalities, which already exist in some percentage of the population, seem to be at least superficially appropriate.”

—————————————————————– —————

Quotes from the Literature

“Specifically, past research suggests that exploitive tendencies and open displays of feelings of entitlement will be less integral to narcissism for females than for males. For females such displays may carry a greater possibility of negative social sanctions because they would violate stereotypical gender-role expectancies for women, who are expected to engage in such positive social behavior as being tender, compassionate, warm, sympathetic, sensitive, and understanding.

In females, Exploitiveness/Entitlement is less well-integrated with the other components of narcissism as measured by the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) - Leadership/Authority, Self-absorption/Self-admiration, and Superiority/Arrogance- than in males - though ‘male and female narcissists in general showed striking similarities in the manner in which most of the facets of narcissism were integrated with each other’.”

Gender differences in the structure of narcissism: a multi-sample analysis of the narcissistic personality inventory - Brian T. Tschanz, Carolyn C. Morf, Charles W. Turner - Sex Roles: A Journal of Research - Issue: May, 1998

Finally Free Yourself From Worry And Fear.

Would you like to move your life ahead in spite of worry and fear? Everyone has fears and worries, what sets us apart is our ability to deal with them and move on. This article will show you how to manage your worries and fears, so you free yourself from them. This is the place to obtain quick, action-oriented advice on steps you can take right now to reduce your fears and worries.

The first step in managing your fears and worries is to recognize that you have them, and then to make them real.

Write out a list of each of the fears and worries you have. Many of the items on your list will not stand the light of day. You will immediately realize that some of them are silly or just aren’t things you should be worried about. Take each of these items off the list.

Next, take each item and make a list of all the things you can do about it. This shows you that in most cases you will be worried about something that you can’t control at all and that your worry serves no purpose. Vow not to worry about things you can’t control and take them off your list. In the case where you can do something to reduce the worry, your sense of control is enhanced, making you feel better.

Now, ask yourself what is the worst thing that could happen with each worry. In most cases you will find you can live with even the worst outcome and this will also make you feel better.

Once you are down to a hard-core list of fears and worries that you can control, set up a plan to control them. What options do you have? Who can you ask for help? Exactly what has to be done, when? Realize you have a lot of control here and give yourself credit for taking action as you do so in order to lift your spirits.

Also, it helps to realize that you can feel the fear and still take action. Fear serves a purpose in that it is a great “alert” mechanism that helps us stay out of trouble. But once we “get the message” fear has done its job and starts to get in the way. Fear and worry can be a positive if we use it as a call to action and fix a problem. If you acknowledge the fear, and then proceed with what you need to do, you will find you are able to function in spite of the fear.

Here are some other tips that will help you feel better. Make an effort to concentrate on breathing. We tend to limit our breathing when we are fearful. You will feel better, the more you breathe. Also, meditation will help reduce stress and take your mind off your worries. Visualization and affirmations that help you focus on becoming positive in light of the situation can help you move forward while acknowledging the fear. Do not forget physical exercise as a way of reducing the stress that goes with fear and worry.

Once you begin to have things under control, change your focus from the negative fears and worries, to the positive things in your life. When you catch yourself worrying, bring new positive thoughts into your mind. Change your thinking from the “cup is half empty” to the “cup is half full”. Suddenly things that were worries are now positives.

Another way to help reduce the amount of fear and worry in your life in the future is to begin to do more planning on the things you will be doing. Look for areas that could become problems and begin to cover all the contingences. Forward planning will build your self-confidence and ward off those nagging fears that something is not right.

So now you have the tools necessary to reduce the fear and worry in your life and replace them with a justifiably positive attitude backed up with action and solutions. Start using these tools right now and begin to live a happier life.

Cruise Line Ratings

Cruise lines are one of most popular modes of vacation and adventure. The comfort and atmosphere provided makes passengers feel at home while being able to enjoy almost all forms of entertainment. There are many kinds of cruise lines available and the difference between them lies due to the facilities, comfort and quality they provide. Depending on certain parameters, cruise lines can be rated on a scale of 1 to 6, 6 stars being the best. The higher the rating, the higher is the package price and quality.

Six stars is the highest rating. These cruise lines have everything of the finest possible quality. Interiors are lavish and made of high quality wood, leather, fabric. The crockery used is expensive. Food served is exotic and tasteful. The cabins are very large. The staff is quite large and they try to provide personal attention to all passengers. These are meant for very high income groups. The atmosphere is quiet and social with few activities and few passengers. 5 Star cruise lines are also of very good quality. They have more activities as compared to 6 stars. These are more suitable for upper middle class. 4 star cruises are quite affordable with good quality service and food. These are more suitable for family vacations and first timers. 3 star cruises are very popular and find customers coming back again and again. These are full of activity and good for any age group and budget. They exist in large numbers and cover many locations. 2 and 1 star cruises are very pocket friendly but lack the spic and span glamour of new ones. Services are not bad and provide a good experience of cruising at a very reasonable price. The number of passengers is also quite high. The mood is more festive and carnival like.

Cruise lines vary in their mood, atmosphere, activities, facilities and comfort. They can give you a life time of an experience if chosen well. Brochures and websites provide detailed ratings of various cruise lines. To decide, one can read them in detail to look at destination options, travel time, affordability and whatever caters to individual interests. Whatever the rating, any cruise line experience is, overall, enjoyable.

Cruise Lines provides detailed information on Cruise Lines, Cruise Line Jobs, Cruise Line Ratings, Luxury Cruise Lines and more. Cruise Lines is affiliated with Working On Cruise Ships.

The Noble Man and Woman

“But the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands”(Isaiah 32:8); “If a man cleanses himself…he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work” (2 Timothy 2:21).

“Every noble life leaves its fiber interwoven forever in the work of the world” (Ruskin). We all know that certain person who has enriched our lives beyond any human measurement; that extraordinary person who has elevated our existence into his or her serene sphere and inspired us to be and to do our best. Years later, when confronted with a crisis, we think of the person and the trustworthy advice given in love, and it enables us to go on. If we are so fortunate to have been granted such a gift, let us thank God every day for that person. My extraordinary person was a teacher.

Nobility is all about making the abrasions of life into sterling metal. “Noble metal” is a metal made of chemical elements that have outstanding resistance to oxidation, even at high temperatures.

Noble souls, though dust and heat,
Rise from disaster and defeat
The stronger;
And conscious still of the divine
Within them, lie on earth supine
No longer.
Longfellow.

True nobility presupposes riches of everlasting quality such as virtue, tolerance, high standards and motivations, integrity, generosity, and graciousness. “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop” (Luke 8:15).

“My heart is stirred by a noble theme…” (Psalm 45:1). What more noble theme can we have than Christ? We become what we behold and, by beholding Christ, we become gracious and lovely and noble, fit for earth and purified for heaven.

4 Tricks For Lightning Fast Indexing

The biggest problem that most are running into seems to do with getting INTO the search engines. Rankings aside, you need to first get them to index you. Here are the four main ways to assure yourself fast indexing:

Indexing Tip #1:
Never launch a new site with a lot of back links. Build natural links over weeks and months.

Let’s face it, there is no guaranteed method of getting indexed by Google fast, and buying links from high-ranking sites does not guarantees anything either.

The most immediate red flag you should watch out for is your number of incoming links. According to Google, it takes time to get link popularity and sites should not have more than 100 incoming links.

It’s okay to launch with a quality link or two. But beyond that, you are pushing it!

Here is the scoop! It takes 30-45 days for Google to deep index new sites. Instead of sitting around during “sandbox” time, use that period to build a strong set of natural back-links with a variety of sites.

Indexing Tip #2:
Register your domain name at least four months before you plan to launch the site.

No I am not kidding! Whether you agree with it or not, history shows that Google takes older URLs far more seriously than newer ones. So register your domain name as soon as you plan on developing a site.

Indexing Tip #3:
Blog and ping carefully.

Blogging & pinging is one of the fastest ways to get into the Yahoo index - it can literally get you into Yahoo overnight - helps with MSN as well.

Will blogging and pinging help get you into Google? Maybe. But over-pinging can set off red flags on the ping servers, and if you’re using automated blogging software, overdoing it can cause Blogger.com and other services to shut down your blog.

Blogging and pinging intelligently can get your blog indexed in Yahoo quickly, but ping carefully.

Does Yahoo de-index junk blogs? Absolutely. Especially since the creation of all this software, the search engines are watching closely for red flags (use software wisely).

So what can you do about Yahoo Search? Not much… You can be smart about blogging and pinging or even better, you can create real (not by software) blogs. You still have to be careful with pinging though.

In the end, blogging and pinging should be part of every beginner’s indexing strategy.

Indexing Tip #4:
If you build bulk directory/portal sites - keep them in the 200-300 page range.

We know it’s such a blast to build those monster 1000-5000 page sites, even with growing evidence of Google bots’ tendencies to stall after indexing the first 200 pages or so…

So if you’re into blasting out those gigantic directories and sick of waiting months for them to get indexed, experiment with building smaller sites around more targeted niches.

In a nutshell: Divide those mega-keyword lists, spend a little time grouping your sub-lists, and build smaller sites.

All in all, the best way to get indexed, stay indexed and eventually get ranked is to recruit incoming link partners. See, blogging and pinging could be gone tomorrow. But, linking is an integral part of how the internet works - it will never go away.

Concentrate on building sites and recruiting links - the links get you indexed, ranked and even bring you free traffic from those who click the links!

Buy a new home with bkr loans, 368160 euro in a week

And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin. Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 6 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 5 percentage. But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 4 percent offered by competitors will change.

Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.

Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. Different lenders charge different fees.

In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 9 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. See which lenders are charging fees 6 percent and for how much. To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering. A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 3 percent. Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 5 percent. See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 8 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust’ It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.

Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.

While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 8 percent.

How to improve your employment prospects as a musician.

How do you expand your opportunities to work in the music business? How do you improve your employment prospects? The key to doing that is developing your versatility. There are many ways of expanding what you already know how to do as a musician. It’s all about using the skills that you already possess and channeling them towards related fields.

Ask yourself what your most basic skill is. Let’s say you play the guitar. You will find that there are several related instruments that you can easily adapt your skill to. Instead of limiting yourself to the guitar or one kind of guitar, why not expand your employment opportunities? Why not learn to play related instruments?

There are so many guitar related instruments. How about the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, twelve-string guitar, five-string banjo, tenor banjo, ukulele, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, and so on?

You can even learn different styles of playing. Learn to use finger picks. Learn to play both pick style and finger style. Electric guitarists should probably own both jazz and rock guitars. By doing this you increase your musical scope and you will be able to take on new projects easily. There will be more variety in the music that you play. Your arrangements will not all sound the same.

You can apply the examples mentioned above to all instruments and musical skills. Let’s look at a few others.

Another example is bass players. The same can be said of them. Instead of limiting themselves to the electric bass, they can learn to use a bow, play related instruments like the upright acoustic bass, learn to play both fretted and fretless basses, and use effects pedals.

Keyboard players should own more than one synthesizer. How about learning to play related instruments like organ, harpsichord and piano? Why not learn about MIDI and hook various keyboards together, along with a PC?

I could go on and on mentioning various instruments and skills and how a musician can become more versatile. Musicians must simply start with their most basic skill and expand it. This is an excellent way of ensuring that you excel in the music business.

The world is a very competitive one and you must continue to be competitive. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Add some variety and you may be surprised at how far you can reach; and how much more money you can be making.
