Fridge/Freezer Fire
A small part of South Devon was a blaze earlier this week, when fire swept through a house in Teignmouth. The couple who lived there, woke to find that their fridge freezer which wasn’t a Newworld fridge freezer had caught fire early in the morning.
Some of the furniture throughout the house was damaged by the acrid black smoke which had caused through it. The Teignmouth fire chief commented that the shutting of the lounge door before the couple went to bed may well have saved their lives.
A firefighters from nearby town Dawlish and also from Teignmouth arrived at the couple’s house just after 3 a.m. in the morning. As a precautionary measure a couple living below were also evacuated.
The couple were woken to find that there was smoke everywhere; and when they peaked past the lounge door, they found that the room was alight. Following this, they called 999 and evacuated the house with their dog.
The fire crews battled with the blaze, using a hose and yet until just after 5 a.m. that morning. Following analysis of the scene initial causes of the fire are believed to be accidental. This should be noted, that the couple had any fire alarm attached to the ceiling in the lounge, but they didn’t have any on any other levels of the house.
A fireman commented that had the door of the lounge not been shut then the smoke may well have spread exceptionally quickly surrounds the house, which could have prevented the couple from leaving, and this could have meant fatalities.
The couple have since spoken about her ordeal, following spending the whole of the following day contacting their insurance company, and picking through the firedamaged wreckage to salvage any goods that they could. They have been offered places to stay by concerned friends and family, as the current dwelling is unlivable.
